Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 47 — Arjuna’s Deterrent Declaration
Sañjaya’s Report
idaṃ ca brūyā mā vṛṇīṣveti loke yuddhe dvitīyaṃ sacivaṃ rathastham | śiner naptāraṃ pravṛṇīma sātyakiṃ mahābalaṃ vītabhayaṃ kṛtāstram ||
The verse frames kingship and survival as ethically secondary to rightful conduct and preparedness: it warns against clinging to life merely for worldly enjoyment of power, and emphasizes disciplined readiness by appointing a fearless, weapon-trained ally for the coming war.
Sañjaya reports a message intended for Duryodhana: the opposing side declares its resolve for war and announces that Sātyaki—Śini’s grandson, a renowned chariot-warrior—has been selected as an unmatched second-in-command and close aide in battle.
