Sañjaya’s Envoy-Speech on Peace
tadaiva me sañjaya dīvyato 'bhūn matiḥ kurūṇām āgataḥ syād abhāvaḥ | kāvyāṃ vācaṃ viduro bhāṣamāṇo na vindate yad dhārtarāṣṭrāt praśaṃbhām ||
When wise and ethical counsel is offered but receives no respect from those in power, it signals moral collapse; such rejection of dharma and prudent policy (nīti) becomes a forewarning of collective ruin.
During the period associated with the dice-game, Vidura speaks carefully reasoned, policy-minded advice, yet Duryodhana offers him no approval. Observing this, Sanjaya concludes that the Kurus’ destruction is likely imminent.
