Bhishma’s Account of Parashurama’s Challenge and the March to Kurukshetra
अभिवाद्य तथैवाहं रथमारुह्म भारत । युयुत्सुर्जामदग्न्यस्य प्रमुखे वीतभी: स्थित:,भारत! पूर्ववत् गुरुको प्रणाम करके अपने रथपर आखरूढ़ हो युद्धकी इच्छासे परशुरामजीके सामने मैं निर्भय होकर डट गया
abhivādya tathaivāhaṁ ratham āruhma bhārata | yuyutsur jāmadagnyasya pramukhe vīta-bhīḥ sthitaḥ ||
ビーシュマは言った。「バーラタよ、私は以前と同じく師に礼拝してから戦車に乗り、そして戦いを望みつつ、ジャマダグニの子(パラシュラーマ)の前に、恐れなく堅く立った。」
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights a dharmic tension resolved through conduct: Bhishma maintains reverence toward his guru (by salutation) while also standing firm in his kshatriya obligation to face a challenge without fear. Respect and resolve are shown as compatible when each is expressed in its proper sphere.
Bhishma narrates that he first offers formal obeisance to Parashurama, his revered teacher, then mounts his chariot and positions himself directly before Parashurama, ready for combat and unafraid—signaling the commencement of their confrontation.
