Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge

bhīṣma uvāca |
evam uktas tadā rāmo jahi bhīṣmam iti prabho |
uvāca rudatīṁ kanyāṁ codayantīṁ punaḥ punaḥ ||
ビーシュマは語った。するとラーマ(パラシュラーマ)は、「主よ、ビーシュマを討て」と告げられ、泣きながら幾度も促すその乙女にこう言った。「美しき者よ、カーシー王の姫よ。わが誓いによれば、ヴェーダに通じたバラモンに必要が生じた時にのみ、私は武器を取る。かかる理由なくして、望むままに兵刃を執ることはない。ゆえに、この誓いを守りつつ、そなたのために他に何を成せようか。」
भीष्म उवाच
The verse sets up a dharmic dilemma: righteous anger and the demand for retribution confront the discipline of a vow. It highlights that ethical action in the Mahabharata often depends not only on the grievance but also on one’s svadharma (role-duty) and prior commitments.
Amba, weeping, repeatedly urges Parashurama—addressing him as ‘Lord’—to slay Bhishma. Bhishma reports that Parashurama then responds to her, initiating the exchange that will lead toward the famed confrontation between Parashurama and Bhishma.
