Bhīṣma’s Appointment as Commander-in-Chief
naiṣa kāmayate dharmaṁ naiṣa kāmayate yaśaḥ | jitaṁ sa manyate sarvaṁ durātmā karṇam āśritaḥ ||
Kṛṣṇa highlights a moral blindness: when a person becomes intoxicated by power and overconfidence—here, Duryodhana’s reliance on Karṇa—he stops valuing dharma (right conduct) and yaśas (honorable reputation). Ethical aspiration collapses when victory is presumed and conscience is replaced by arrogance.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations and assessments, Kṛṣṇa characterizes Duryodhana’s mindset. He explains that Duryodhana, emboldened by Karṇa’s support, believes success is assured and therefore shows no inclination toward a righteous settlement or concern for lasting honor.
