Adhyāya 128 — Proposal to Restrain Keśava; Sātyaki’s Warning and Vidura–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Counsel
duryodhanako gāndhārīkī phaṭakāra bhīṣmasya tu pituś caiva mama cāpacitiḥ kṛtā | bhaved droṇamukhānāṃ ca suhṛdāṃ śāmyatā tvayā ||
A stern reprimand given for the sake of dharma is itself a form of honoring elders and well-wishers; true respect is shown when one restrains anger and becomes calm, thereby upholding the counsel of figures like Bhīṣma and Droṇa.
Vaiśampāyana explains that Gāndhārī’s sharp words to Duryodhana are not mere harshness but a corrective act aligned with the elders’ guidance. He adds that if Duryodhana pacifies himself, the intended reverence toward Bhīṣma, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and other well-wishers such as Droṇa will be effectively accomplished.
