Adhyāya 12: Devas’ Petition to Nahūṣa; Bṛhaspati on Śaraṇāgata-Dharma; Indrāṇī’s Strategic Delay
Bṛhaspatir uvāca: Nahuṣaṃ yācatāṃ devī kiñcit kālāntaraṃ śubhā | Indrāṇī hitam etad dhi tathāsmākaṃ bhaviṣyati ||
Wise counsel may recommend delay not as evasion but as ethical prudence—creating time to prevent harm, protect the vulnerable, and allow a safer resolution. Here, requesting a brief interval is presented as ‘hita’ (welfare) for both Indrāṇī and the gods.
Bṛhaspati advises the gods that Indrāṇī (Śacī) should ask Nahuṣa for some time. The postponement is a strategic safeguard, meant to secure Indrāṇī’s safety and to serve the gods’ broader interests in the unfolding crisis involving Nahuṣa.
