bharturarthe ca yaḥ śūro vikramed vāhinīmukhe

True heroism is defined not merely by fighting, but by steadfast loyalty and willingness to risk oneself for a rightful superior’s cause—an ethic of duty-bound courage.
In Śānti Parva’s discourse on dharma and conduct, Ambarīṣa describes the ideal brave man: one who, for his lord’s purpose, steps into the army’s forefront, exemplifying committed service in a martial context.
