Utathya’s Instruction: Royal Dharma, Restraint of Pride, Protection of Subjects
dharme tiṣṭhanti bhūtāni dharmo rājani tiṣṭhati | taṁ rājā sādhu yaḥ śāsti sa rājā pṛthivīpatiḥ ||
Dharma sustains all life, and the king is the primary human instrument through whom dharma is upheld in society; a ruler becomes a true sovereign only by administering dharma rightly.
Utathya is instructing on rājadharma (the duties of kings), emphasizing that the stability of the world depends on dharma and that the king’s legitimacy rests on just governance.
