Bhīṣma on the Śara-Śayyā: Yudhiṣṭhira and Kṛṣṇa Approach the Eldest for Śānti
sevyamānaḥ savaiyākhyo gāḍeya viditastava | gaḍānandana! yoga-sāṅkhyayoḥ yo sanātano dharmo niyataḥ tathā caturṇāṃ varṇānāṃ ye ’virodhino dharmāḥ proktāḥ, yaṃ sarve janāḥ sevante, tat sarvaṃ te vyākhyāsahitaṃ viditam |
The verse highlights that true understanding of dharma includes both philosophical foundations (Yoga and Sāṅkhya) and practical, socially harmonizing duties for the four varṇas—dharma that is ‘avirodhī’, i.e., not self-contradictory and not disruptive to the wider moral order.
Vaiśampāyana addresses a figure called ‘Gaḍānandana/Gāḍeya’, praising him as a skilled expositor and acknowledging that he already knows—along with proper explanations—the established dharmas taught in Yoga and Sāṅkhya and the commonly practiced, non-conflicting duties for all four social orders.
