Service to Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Allocation of State Duties
“हमारा विश्वास है कि आपलोग निश्चय ही हमें अपने अनुग्रहका पात्र समझते हैं, तभी तो ईर्ष्या और द्वेष छोड़कर हमें इस प्रकार गुणसम्पन्न बता रहे हैं ।।
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahārājaḥ pitā me daivataṃ param | śāsane 'sya priye caiva stheyaṃ matpriyakāṅkṣibhiḥ ||
「あなたがたが確かに我らを恩寵に値する者と見なしてくださるからこそ、妬みと憎しみを捨て、このように我らを徳ある者と称えてくださるのだと、我らは信じている。大王ドリタラーシュトラは我が父であり、我にとっては神にも等しい至上の敬うべきお方である。ゆえに、我が望むところを願う者は、彼の喜ぶことに堅く立ち、その命に従って離れてはならぬ。」
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse teaches that reverence for one’s father/elder—especially a reigning king—creates a moral obligation: those who wish to please the speaker should align themselves with the elder’s commands and what pleases him, restraining personal agendas.
In the Shānti Parva’s reflective setting, a speaker underscores Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s supreme status for him and instructs others that, if they seek his goodwill, they should remain obedient to Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s rule and act in ways that please the king.
