धर्मस्य बहुद्वारत्वम् — Nārada’s Audience with Indra (Śānti-parva 340)

धारयामास देवेशो हस्तैर्यज्ञपतिस्तदा । यज्ञोंके स्वामी उन भगवान्‌ देवेश्वर विष्णुने उस समय अपने हाथोंमें यज्ञवेदी, कमण्डलु, चमकीले मणिरत्न, उपानह, कुशा, मृगचर्म, दण्ड-काष्ठ और प्रज्वलित अग्नि-- ये सब वस्तुएँ ले रखी थीं,(कूृकलासं नृगं चैव मोचयिष्ये ह वै पुन: ।। तत्र पौत्रनिमित्तेन गत्वा वै शोणितं पुरम्‌ | बाणस्य च पुरं गत्वा करिष्ये कदनं महत्‌ ।।) गिरगिटकी योनिमें पड़े हुए राजा नृगका भी उद्धार करूँगा। उसी अवतारमें अपने पौत्र अनिरुद्धके निमित्त बाणासुरकी राजधानी शोणितपुरमें जाकर वहाँकी असुरसेनाका महान्‌ संहार कर डालूँगा ।। महेश्वरमहासेनौ बाणप्रियहितैषिणौ

bhīṣma uvāca | dhārayāmāsa deveśo hastair yajñapatistadā | kūrkalāsaṃ nṛgaṃ caiva mocayiṣye ha vai punaḥ || tatra pautranimittena gatvā vai śoṇitaṃ puram | bāṇasya ca puraṃ gatvā kariṣye kadanaṃ mahat || maheśvaramahāsenau bāṇapriyahitaiṣiṇau ||

ビーシュマは語った。「その時、神々の主にして祭祀の主は、礼拝の具—祭壇、水壺(カマンダル)、燦然たる宝珠、履物、聖なるクシャ草、鹿皮、木の杖、そして燃え盛る聖火—それらすべてを御手に携えておられた。さらにまた、蜥蜴の胎に堕ちたヌリガ王をも、わたしは救い出そう。同じ降臨において、孫アニルッダのために、バーナの都ショーニタプラへ赴き、そこでアスラの軍勢に大いなる殺戮をもたらすであろう—たとえマヘーシュヴァラと大将軍スカンダが、バーナの愛するものと益となるものを求めて守護に立とうとも。」

Educational Q&A

The passage frames Viṣṇu as the presiding power behind yajña (ritual order) and as the protector who intervenes to restore dharma: He both liberates the afflicted (Nṛga) and restrains adharma through force when necessary (the destruction at Śoṇitapura), even when opposed by formidable divine allies of the wrongdoer.
