(Nārāyaṇīyam Ākhyānam) — Nārada’s Return and Hymnic Consolidation
sa gatiṁ paramāṁ prāpto duṣprapām ajitendriyaiḥ | devatāir api viprarṣe taṁ tvaṁ kim anuśocasi ||
Grief is misplaced when the departed has attained a supreme spiritual destination; the verse redirects emotion toward discernment, emphasizing that self-mastery (conquest of the senses) is rare and that the highest attainment surpasses even divine status.
Bhishma addresses a Brahmin sage who is lamenting someone’s death. He counters the lament by asserting that the person has reached the highest gati—difficult even for the gods—thereby urging the listener to relinquish sorrow.
