Adhyāya 33 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s Post-Conflict Remorse and Inquiry on Āśrama Discipline

The verse frames renunciation as something that should be guided by dharma: even the desire to abandon the body through austerity is placed under the discipline of the āśrama system, seeking proper counsel rather than impulsive self-denial.
In the instruction-filled Śānti Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Bhīṣma as ‘Grandfather’ and asks him to specify which āśrama or regulated path of life is especially appropriate for undertaking severe austerities with the intent of relinquishing the body.
