Yajña-bhāga-vyavasthā and the Pravṛtti–Nivṛtti Framework
yathāmati yathāpāṭhaṃ tathā vidyā phaliṣyati | sarvas taratu durgāṇi sarvo bhadrāṇi paśyatu |
The fruit of learning depends on two factors: one’s innate/formed understanding (mati) and one’s actual study/recitation effort (pāṭha). Instruction alone is not enough; results arise proportionately to capacity and disciplined practice, and the verse closes with a universal wish for safety and welfare.
In the Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs on righteous conduct and practical wisdom. Here he summarizes a principle about education—how knowledge becomes effective—and then offers a benedictory prayer that all may cross dangers and attain auspicious well-being.
