Yoga Definition and Sāṃkhya Enumeration
tāsāṁ darpaḥ samabhavat prajānāṁ dharmanāśanaḥ | darpātmanāṁ tataḥ paścāt krodhas tāsām ajāyata ||
The verse presents a moral-psychological chain: pride (darpa) undermines dharma, and once pride dominates the mind, anger (krodha) naturally follows. Ethical decline is shown as beginning inwardly, in dispositions, before it appears outwardly in harmful actions.
Parāśara is describing the degeneration of the people: arrogance first manifests among them and destroys their commitment to dharma; after pride takes root in their inner nature, anger arises as its consequence.
