Educational Q&A

The verse teaches restraint of grief through a dharmic re-framing of death: if the departed has attained an auspicious end and greater merit, lamentation is discouraged. Ethical emphasis falls on recognizing higher spiritual good (puṇya, bhadra-gati) over attachment-based sorrow.

Vāyudeva addresses Suñjaya, responding to sorrow over a son’s death. He asserts that the deceased has achieved a highly auspicious condition—described as ‘fourfold blessed’—and is even ‘more meritorious than a son,’ urging Suñjaya to stop lamenting.
