नक्तंचर्या दिवास्वप्रमालस्यं पैशुनं मदम् | अतियोगमयोगं च श्रेयसो<र्थी परित्यजेत्
naktaṃcaryā divāsvapram ālasyaṃ paiśunaṃ madam | atiyogam ayogaṃ ca śreyaso 'rthī parityajet ||
ナーラダは言った。「真の福利を求める者は、次の習いを捨てよ。夜に出歩くこと、昼に眠ること、怠惰、悪口を言い触らすこと、酩酊、そして食と行いの規律における両極—過度の耽溺と、全き断絶—である。かかる自制こそ、善へ向かう生を支える。」
नारद उवाच
A seeker of śreyas (the higher good) should abandon harmful habits—night-roaming, daytime sleeping, laziness, slander, and intoxication—and should avoid extremes in lifestyle, cultivating balanced discipline.
In Śānti Parva, Nārada is giving ethical instruction, listing specific behaviors that obstruct welfare and spiritual-ethical progress, emphasizing restraint and moderation.
