Adhyāya 272: Vṛtrasya Dharmiṣṭhatā, Indrasya Mohaḥ, Vasiṣṭha-upadeśaḥ

भारत! उत्तम मित्र और धनके लाभसे वह इहलोक और परलोकमें भी आनन्दित होता है। ऐसा पुरुष शब्द, स्पर्श, रूप, रस तथा गन्ध--इन पाँचों विषयोंपर प्रभुत्व प्राप्त कर लेता है। इसे धर्मका फल माना जाता है। युधिष्ठिर! वह धर्मका फल पाकर भी हर्षसे फूल नहीं उठता है ।।

atṛpyamāṇo nirvedam ādatte jñānacakṣuṣā | prajñācakṣur yadā kāme rase gandhe na rajyate ||

ビーシュマは言った。「おおバーラタよ。最上の友と財を得ることにより、その者はこの世でも来世でも歓喜する。そのような人は、声・触・色・味・香という五つの対象を制し、これをダルマの果とみなす。ユディシュティラよ。ダルマの果を得ても、彼は歓喜にふくらみはしない。感官の享楽に飽くことのない者は、知の眼によって離欲(ヴァイラーギャ)を取り上げる。もし人が分別の眼で見て、欲にも、味や香にも染まらぬなら、その堅固さこそダルマの果とされる。享受は訪れ得るが、彼は得意に高ぶらない。彼の支配は、執着しないことにあるからだ。」

The fruit of dharma is inner mastery: even when pleasures and gains are available, a wise person does not become attached to sense-objects. Through jñāna (insight), he adopts nirveda (dispassion), remaining steady rather than elated or enslaved by desire.

In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma continues advising Yudhishthira on righteous living after the war. Here he describes the mark of a truly discerning person: one who, despite encountering sensory attractions, remains unattached and thus embodies the mature result of dharma.
