The verse teaches restraint in speech and action: a brāhmaṇa should avoid hurtful words and abstain from violence, since violence is aligned with adharma. Non-injury and disciplined speech are presented as an inherited, authoritative standard of conduct.
In the didactic setting of the Śānti Parva, Vyāsa lays down normative guidance on brāhmaṇa conduct, emphasizing ethical self-control—especially in speech and in refraining from harming others—as part of traditional dharma.
