Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature
itīmaṁ hṛdayagranthiṁ buddhibhedamayaṁ dṛḍham | vimucya sukham āsīta na śocec chinnasaṁśayaḥ ||
Suffering and grief persist as long as the heart remains tied by rigid inner divisions fabricated by the intellect (seeing ‘I vs. other’, ‘mine vs. not-mine’, ‘gain vs. loss’). By loosening this knot through clear understanding, one becomes free of doubt and therefore free of grief, abiding in inner ease.
Bhishma, instructing on peace and right conduct in the Shanti Parva, concludes a point of spiritual counsel: the listener should untie the deep inner knot created by mental discrimination and thereby live calmly, with doubts resolved and sorrow ended.
