Jāpakānāṃ Gatiḥ — The Destinies of Japa-Practitioners (Śānti Parva 12.190)
satyaṃ dānam athādroha ānṛśaṃsyaṃ trapā ghṛṇā | tapaś ca dṛśyate yatra sa brāhmaṇa iti smṛtaḥ ||
Brahminhood is defined by observable ethical qualities—truth, generosity, non-harm, kindness, modesty, compassion, and disciplined austerity—rather than merely by birth or external markers.
In the Śānti Parva’s dharma-discourse, Bharadvāja states a normative criterion for identifying a brāhmaṇa: the presence of specific virtues in a person’s conduct and character.
