Adhyāya 174: Karma as an inescapable companion (कर्मानुगमन-उपदेश)
sakhāyaṃ me sudayitaṃ gautamaṃ jīvayety uta |
A dharmic person extends requested grace beyond self-interest: true gratitude and righteousness include concern for companions and dependents, asking that mercy be shared rather than hoarded.
In Bhishma’s narration, a petitioner—having received or expecting a boon—bows and asks that his beloved friend Gautama also be brought back to life, showing loyalty and compassionate intent.
