पुत्रशोकाभितप्तानां मृतानामद्य व: क्षमम्‌ । सुखसम्भावनं कृत्वा धारयित्वा सुखं स्वयम्‌ | त्यक्त्वा गमिष्यथ क्वाद्य समुत्सृज्याल्पबुद्धिवत्‌

jambuka uvāca | putraśokābhitaptānāṁ mṛtānām adya vaḥ kṣamam | sukhasambhāvanaṁ kṛtvā dhārayitvā sukhaṁ svayam | tyaktvā gamiṣyatha kvādya samutsṛjyālpabuddhivat ||

ジャムブカは言った。「子を失った悲嘆に焼かれている汝らは、すでに死者同然である。ゆえに今日、このように引き返すのは相応しくない。この子によって幸福が生まれ得ると見なし、またその幸福を得る望みを自ら固く抱いてきたのに――今ここで、浅慮な者のように彼を捨て去るなら、汝らは今日いずこへ行くというのか。」
