Tapas, Tīrtha, and Moral Rehabilitation (Śānti-parva 148)
adyaprabhṛti dehaṃ sva sarvabhogair vivarjitam
The verse teaches deliberate restraint: choosing to abstain from pleasures is presented as an ethical discipline that supports dharma, clarity of mind, and peace.
Bhishma, speaking within the Śānti Parva’s instruction on right conduct, declares a resolve that from this day forward he will keep his body free from indulgence in enjoyments—marking a shift toward austerity and self-governance.
