शकुनि (हिरण्मय-पक्षी) उपदेशः — Vighasāśin and the Difficulty of Gārhasthya
एतद् विदुस्तपो विप्रा द्वन्द्ातीता विमत्सरा: । तस्माद् व्रतं मध्यमं तु लोकेषु तप उच्यते
etad vidus tapo viprā dvandvātītā vimatsarāḥ | tasmād vrataṁ madhyamaṁ tu lokeṣu tapa ucyate ||
二つの対立( द्वन्द्व )をことごとく超え、嫉みを離れたバラモンたちは、これこそが真の苦行であると知っている。ゆえに、世間では誓戒(ヴラタ)も「苦行」と呼ばれるが、内なる平等心と、私心なき聖なる務めの遂行という、より高い修行に比べれば、それは中位のものとされる。
अजुन उवाच
True tapas is primarily inner: freedom from envy and transcendence of dualities. External vows may be called austerity, but they are secondary unless grounded in inner equanimity and purity of intent.
