The verse teaches that one who seeks the results of the ancient Dharma must honor and worship one’s teachers/elders, share resources properly, and live with disciplined care—especially by providing necessities to gurus and not consuming for oneself without due distribution.
Bhīṣma is instructing Yudhiṣṭhira in the Śānti Parva on righteous conduct. Here he emphasizes the ethical priority of revering gurus and practicing careful, distributive living as part of sustaining traditional Dharma.
