Praise of Venerating Mother, Father, and Teacher
नैतानतिशयेज्जातु नात्यश्रीयान्न दूषयेत्
na etān atiśayej jātu nātyaśrīyān na dūṣayet |
ビーシュマは言った。「いかなる時も、彼らに勝って目立とうとしてはならぬ。侮り、貶め、そしってもならぬ。彼らの正当な権威を犯すな。まず彼らに食を供えてから自ら食せよ。彼らに過失をなすりつけるな。常にその奉仕に励め。これこそ最上の功徳の行いである。王の中の最勝者よ、彼らに仕えることで、汝は名声と清らかな誉れ、そして最上の世界への到達を得るであろう。」
भीष्म उवाच
One should not compete with, belittle, or accuse those worthy of reverence; instead, honor their authority, feed them first, and remain devoted in service—this is presented as the highest form of merit leading to fame and auspicious spiritual results.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on righteous conduct, Bhishma addresses a king and lays down practical rules of respectful behavior and service toward revered persons, promising both worldly reputation and otherworldly benefit from such conduct.
