Kṣemadarśa–Kālakavṛkṣīya Saṃvāda: Counsel on Impermanence, Non-attachment, and Composure in Dispossession
अनहनिपि चैवान्यान्मन्यते श्रीमतो जनान् | एतस्मात् कारणादेतद् दु:खं भूयो<नुवर्तते,वह दूसरे धनी मनुष्योंको धनके अयोग्य मानता है। इसी कारण उसका यह ईर्ष्पयाजनक दुःख सदा उसके पीछे लगा रहता है
anahanipi caivānyān manyate śrīmato janān | etasmāt kāraṇād etad duḥkhaṃ bhūyo 'nuvartate ||
ビーシュマは言った。何のきっかけもなく、彼は他の富める人々を「富に値しない」と裁く。ゆえに、嫉妬から生まれたその痛ましい苦しみは、幾度も幾度も戻ってきて、彼の後を追い続ける。
भीष्म उवाच
Envy is self-perpetuating: when a person devalues others' prosperity as undeserved, the resulting sorrow does not end but repeatedly follows him. The ethical counsel is to abandon jealous judgment and cultivate contentment and right discernment.
In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and inner discipline. Here he describes the psychology of an envious person: even unprovoked, he resents the wealthy and therefore remains trapped in recurring misery.
