Śalya Installed as Commander; Coalition Agreement and Battle Arrays (शल्यसेनापत्यारोहणं व्यूहवर्णनं च)
sañjaya uvāca | yudhyamānasya tasyāhaṃ cintayānaś ca bhārata | yoddhāraṃ nādhigacchāmi tulyarūpaṃ janādhipa | iti satyaṃ bravīmyeṣa duryodhana na saṃśayaḥ ||
Even amid war, the epic distinguishes between factual testimony and moral judgment: Sanjaya insists on speaking truthfully about martial superiority, while the broader narrative warns that excellence in battle does not by itself confer righteousness (dharma).
Sanjaya reports to the Kuru court that, as he observes the fighting, he cannot identify any warrior equal to the person under discussion, and he assures Duryodhana that this assessment is true and beyond doubt.
