Sārasvata–Dadhīca Upākhyāna at Sarasvatī Tīrtha
Balarāma’s Pilgrimage Context
taṃ tatra vasamānaṃ tu jaigīṣavyaṃ mahāmunim | yadyapi mahāmunir jaigīṣavyo ’sminn āśrame eva vasati tathāpi devala-munir enaṃ darśayitvā dharmataḥ yoga-sādhanāṃ na karoti | evaṃ tayor tatra vasatoḥ bahu kālo vyatītaḥ ||
Spiritual practice is not merely proximity to a realized sage; it must be undertaken rightly (dharmataḥ) through sincere discipline. Mere recognition of holiness without corresponding effort leads to stagnation, even as time passes.
The narrator states that Jaigīṣavya lives in the hermitage, yet Devala—though aware of him and able to point him out—does not pursue dharmic yogic practice. Consequently, both remain there and a long period elapses.
