शल्यपर्व — चतुर्विंशोऽध्यायः | Śalya Parva, Chapter 24: Disruption of Kaurava Formations and the Elephant Encirclement
vadhāya cātmano 'smābhiḥ saṁyugaṁ rocayiṣyati | tadantaṁ hi bhaved vairaṁ anumānena mādhava ||
The verse frames the end of a feud (vaira) as hinging on the removal of its principal agent: once the surrounding warriors are destroyed and the situation becomes stark, the remaining adversary seeks a final confrontation leading to his own death, which is seen as the terminus of hostility.
Sañjaya reports a prediction to Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa): after the mass killing of enemy Kṣatriya fighters leaves the camp empty, the key opponent will willingly enter battle with them, effectively choosing a fight that ends in his own death, thereby concluding the long-standing enmity.
