शल्यपर्व — चतुर्विंशोऽध्यायः | Śalya Parva, Chapter 24: Disruption of Kaurava Formations and the Elephant Encirclement
sañjaya uvāca | madhukula-bhūṣaṇa! bhīṣmeṇa yā satyā hitakarī ca vāk proktā, tām api sa buddhihīno duryodhanaḥ nābhyagṛhṇāt || tasmiṃs tu tumule bhīṣme pracyute dharaṇītale | na jāne kāraṇaṃ kiṃ tu yena yuddham avartata ||
Wise, truthful counsel—even from an elder like Bhīṣma—becomes fruitless when pride and lack of discernment rule; ethical failure (refusing hita-vākya) sustains destructive conflict.
Sañjaya addresses Kṛṣṇa, recalling that Duryodhana ignored Bhīṣma’s beneficial advice; even after Bhīṣma fell in the fierce battle, the war did not stop and Sañjaya expresses bewilderment at the cause for its continuation.
