Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report
evaṁ te nidhanaṁ yātaḥ putro duryodhano nṛpa | agre yātvā raṇe śūraḥ paścād vinihataḥ paraiḥ ||
The verse underscores the tragic irony of war: even conspicuous valor—being first to enter battle—does not guarantee a righteous outcome or safety. It hints at the larger ethical frame of the Mahābhārata, where personal bravery is distinct from dharmic alignment, and the consequences of adharma culminate in inevitable ruin.
Sañjaya reports to the king that Duryodhana has died. He characterizes Duryodhana as a brave warrior who advanced first into combat, yet ultimately was the last to fall, killed by his enemies—marking the finality of the Kaurava leader’s defeat.
