Sauptika Parva, Adhyaya 8 — Dhṛṣṭadyumna-vadha and the Camp’s Nocturnal Rout

जग्मुः स्वानेव तत्राथ कालेनैव प्रचोदिता: । कितने ही मनुष्य निद्रामें अचेत पड़े थे और घोर अन्धकारसे घिर गये थे। वे सहसा उठकर कालसे प्रेरित हो आत्मीय जनोंका ही वध करने लगे || १०० $ ।।

tyaktvā dvārāṇi ca dvāḥ-sthās tathā gulmāni gaulmīkāḥ

サンジャヤは言った。「彼らは門と門番を捨て、また軍の詰所とその守り手をも捨て去って、襲撃者はなお前へと押し進んだ——夜襲の混乱そのもの、常の防ぎが崩れ、暴力が分別なく広がってゆく姿である。この詩句は、夜の殺戮が孕む倫理的恐怖を示す。恐れと宿命に駆られるとき、人は害を抑えるための境界さえ投げ捨ててしまうのだ。」
