Ethical understanding requires inner discipline: without control of the senses and a sound, non-malicious intellect, even an apparent eagerness to hear instruction will not yield true comprehension of Dharma (right conduct) and Artha (practical welfare).
In the Sauptika Parva, Kripa addresses Aśvatthāman in counsel. He cautions that a disturbed mind and uncontrolled senses prevent one from truly grasping moral and practical guidance—setting the tone for the grave decisions that follow in the night-raid context.
