The verse highlights how external prosperity and public honor can provoke inner jealousy and rivalry. Ethically, it points to the danger of measuring worth through wealth and acclaim, a mindset that can erode dharma and lead to destructive choices.
Duryodhana begins reporting what he witnessed at the Pāṇḍavas’ great royal rite—kings from many regions bringing superb gifts and treasures. This sets the stage for his growing resentment at their rising prestige.
