Adhyāya 31: Rājasūya-samāgama — The Gathering of Kings and the Ordering of Hospitality
ततश्चर्मण्वतीकूले जम्भकस्यात्मजं नृपम् | ददर्श वासुदेवेन शेषितं पूर्ववैरिणा,इसके बाद चर्मण्वतीके तटपर सहदेवने जम्भकके पुत्रको देखा, जिसे पूर्ववैरी वासुदेवने जीवित छोड़ दिया था
tataś carmaṇvatīkūle jambhakasyātmajaṃ nṛpam | dadarśa vāsudevena śeṣitaṃ pūrvavairiṇā ||
ついでカルマṇヴァティー河の岸辺で、彼はジャンバカの子である王を見た――その者はかつて、旧敵ヴァースデーヴァによって命を助けられていた。そこには王者の生に潜む道義の緊張が静かに映る。敵意のただ中にあっても、抑制と「敵を生かす」という選択が、後の出来事と義務を形づくるのである。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical weight of restraint in conflict: sparing an enemy (śeṣitam) is not merely a tactical act but a moral choice that can influence future relationships, duties, and outcomes in the kṣatriya world.
The narrator states that, on the bank of the Carmaṇvatī, the observer encounters a king who is Jambhaka’s son—someone previously left alive by Vāsudeva, despite prior enmity.
