punaḥ punar na mṛṣyāmi hataṃ karṇaṃ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ | yasya bāhor balaṃ tulyaṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ śataṃ śataiḥ ||
The verse highlights the human and ethical weight of war: even when events are part of a larger dharmic outcome, the repeated news of a great warrior’s death remains emotionally unbearable. It points to the tragic cost of conflict and the fragility of worldly power, however immense.
Vaiśampāyana expresses distress at repeatedly hearing that Karṇa—renowned for extraordinary arm-strength likened to that of countless elephants—has been killed by the Pāṇḍavas. The line functions as a lament and a measure of Karṇa’s stature within the war narrative.
