ततस्त्वमर्षी क्रोधसंदीप्तनेत्रो वातात्मज: पाणिना पाणिमार्च्छत्‌ । भीमोअब्रवीदर्जुनं सत्यसंध- ममर्षितो नि:श्वसज्जातमन्यु:,महारथी कर्णका वह शत्रुओंके लिये असहा वैसा पराक्रम दृष्टिपथमें लाकर तथा रणभूमिमें कर्णद्वारा अर्जुनके उस अस्त्रको नष्ट हुआ देखकर अमर्षशील वायुपुत्र भीमसेन हाथ-से-हाथ मलने लगे। उनके नेत्र क्रोधसे प्रज्वलित हो उठे। हृदयमें अमर्ष और क्रोधका प्रादुर्भाव हो गया; अतः वे सत्यप्रतिज्ञ अर्जुनसे इस प्रकार बोले--

tatas tv amarṣī krodha-saṃdīpta-netro vātātmajaḥ pāṇinā pāṇim ārcchat | bhīmo 'bravīd arjunaṃ satya-saṃdhaṃ amarṣito niḥśvasaj-jāta-manyur ||

サञ्जयは語った。すると、風神ヴァーユの子ビーーマは、その侮辱に耐えかね、怒りに燃える眼をぎらつかせて両手を擦り合わせた。憤激に煮えたぎり、胸中に怒気が立ちのぼって荒く息を吐きながら、誓いを堅く守るアルジュナに向かって言葉を発した。この一瞬は戦の倫理的緊張を映し出す――味方の武威が抑えられ、陣営が後退を強いられるとき、正しき決意は、制御を失った怒りへと崩れ落ちぬよう守られねばならぬ。
