राक्षसा: सह यादोभि: श्वसृगालाश्व कर्णत: । प्रेत, पिशाच, मांसभोजी पशु-पक्षी, राक्षस, जल-जन्तु, कुत्ते और सियार--ये कर्णके पक्षमें हो गये

sañjaya uvāca | rākṣasāḥ saha yādobhiḥ śvaśṛgālāśva karṇataḥ | preta-piśāca-māṃsabhogī paśu-pakṣī rākṣasa jala-jantu kutte aur siyār—ye karṇake pakṣaṃ ho gaye |

サञ्जयは語った。「羅刹たちとヤーダヴァ族に加え、犬や山犬(ジャッカル)、馬までもが—さらにプレータ(餓鬼)とピシャーチャ(屍鬼)、肉を貪るもの、獣と鳥、ほかの羅刹、水の生き物、屍肉をあさる者ども—ことごとくカルナの側に列しているのが見えた。」この叙述は、カルナの陣に漂う不吉な道徳的気配を際立たせ、戦においてアダルマが勢いを得ると見なされる場所へ、凶兆の力と捕食の衝動が群がるさまを示している。
