Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how war magnifies ego and the pursuit of victory into mass destruction; even a host ‘shining like the gods’ becomes lifeless on the ground. It implicitly warns that martial glory is transient and that unchecked violence erodes ethical restraint.

Sanjaya is reporting battlefield outcomes to King Dhritarashtra: the Saṁśaptakas are nearly wiped out, and a vast portion of the Bharata/Kuru forces lies slain. The tone is that of grim accounting—measuring the scale of losses and the devastation of the day’s fighting.
