Aśvatthāman’s Arrow-Screen and the Confrontation with Yudhiṣṭhira

evaṁ vidvag añjoṣam āsva śṛṇu cātrottaraṁ vacaḥ | vāsāṁsy utsṛjya nṛtyanti striyo yā madya-mohitāḥ ||

Educational Q&A

The verse frames a polemical claim about moral authority: Karna argues that one who is (in his view) born from or associated with immodest, intoxicated behavior lacks the standing to preach dharma. It illustrates how ethical discourse in the epic is often entangled with honor, lineage, and rhetorical attack rather than calm moral reasoning.

In Karṇa Parva, Karna addresses Śalya, who serves as his charioteer and repeatedly provokes him with cutting remarks. Here Karna retaliates by ordering Śalya to be silent and by insulting the Madra people and Śalya’s background, questioning Śalya’s right to speak on dharma.
