The verse highlights humility and discernment: even the gods can be overcome, and true superiority may manifest without violence—prompting respectful inquiry into the source of such extraordinary power.
The speaker states that the gods, even with Indra, were defeated by a mere boy without any battle, as if in play; therefore they wish to ask the addressed person about that boy and the cause of their defeat.
