तेन भग्नानरीन्‌ सर्वान्‌ मद्धग्नान्‌ मन्‍्यते जन: । तेन भग्नानि सैन्यानि पृष्ठतो<नुव्रजाम्पयहम्‌,उन्होंने ही मेरे समस्त शत्रुओंको मार भगाया है, किंतु लोग समझते हैं कि मैंने ही उन्हें मारा और भगाया है। शत्रुओंकी सारी सेनाएँ उन्हींके द्वारा नष्ट की गयीं, मैं तो केवल उनके पीछे-पीछे चलता था

tena bhagnānarīn sarvān maddhagnān manyate janaḥ | tena bhagnāni sainyāni pṛṣṭhato 'nuvrajāmy aham ||

彼によって敵の戦士たちはことごとく打ち崩された。だが人々は、私が自ら討ち伏せたのだと思っている。敵軍が粉砕されたのも彼によるのに、私はただその後ろを追っていただけだ――名声は目に見える働き手にまとわりつき、真の因は見えぬまま残るという戒めである。
