Hearing the reproach of Droṇa and the Sātyaki–Pārṣata dispute

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how outward splendor in war can be morally ambiguous: a terrifying, demon-like presence may appear ‘brilliant’ yet signify adharma and destruction. It cautions that radiance and grandeur are not reliable measures of righteousness.

Sañjaya is describing to Dhṛtarāṣṭra the striking appearance of a rākṣasa-like warrior on the battlefield, comparing him to a shattered heap of black pigment (añjana), emphasizing his dark, fearsome, and ominous presence.
