Chapter 161
आस्तीर्णा वसुधा सर्वा शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् । राजन! युद्धमें पीठ न दिखानेवाले शूरवीरोंके कट-कटकर गिरे हुए मस्तकों और भुजाओंसे वहाँकी सारी भूमि सब ओरसे पट गयी थी
āstīrṇā vasudhā sarvā śūrāṇām anivartinām | rājan yuddheṃ pīṭha na dikhānevāle śūravīroṃ ke kaṭ-kaṭkar gire hue mastakoṃ aur bhujāoṃ se vahāṃ kī sārī bhūmi sab or se paṭ gayī thī |
サञ्जयは語った。「王よ、そこでは大地のすべてが、戦に背を見せぬ不退の勇士たちの、斬り落とされた首と腕によって四方から覆われていた。」その光景は、揺るがぬ武勇の払う凄惨な代価と、万物を呑み込む戦の冷酷さを、黙して告げていた。
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores the kṣatriya ideal of not retreating in battle, while simultaneously revealing the ethical gravity and human cost of such unwavering martial resolve—valor is praised, yet war’s devastation is unmistakable.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the battlefield has become completely covered with the severed heads and arms of warriors who refused to turn their backs, emphasizing the ferocity of the fighting.
