Adhyāya 16: Saṃśaptaka-vrata and the Diversion of Arjuna

tat prabhagnaṁ balaṁ dṛṣṭvā śatrubhir bhṛśam arditam | alaṁ drutena vaḥ śūrā iti droṇo 'bhyabhāṣata ||

Educational Q&A

In the midst of defeat and confusion, Droṇa urges warriors to abandon panic and stand firm. The verse reinforces the kṣatriya ideal of courage and steadiness—flight born of fear is portrayed as futile and dishonorable in the epic’s dharma-oriented worldview.

Sañjaya reports that the Kaurava forces are breaking and being harshly pressed by their opponents. Observing this rout, Droṇa calls out to the warriors, telling them to stop running and to hold their ground.
