sañjaya uvāca | dyaur ivāsīt sanakṣatrā rajanyāṃ bharatarṣabha | maṇi-svarṇa-vibhūṣitā sā kaurava-senā nakṣatra-yuktam ākāśam iva suśobhitā || gomāyu-bala-saṃghuṣṭā śakti-dhvaja-samākulā ||
サンジャヤは言った。バーラタ族の雄牛よ、その夜、宝玉と黄金の装身具で飾られたクル族(カウラヴァ)の軍勢は、星をちりばめた天空のように輝いていた。そこには山犬(ジャッカル)の叫びと兵のどよめきが轟き、槍と旗印がひしめいていた――目を奪うほどの不吉な光彩が、戦の道義の闇をいっそう際立たせていた。
संजय उवाच
The verse contrasts outward brilliance with inner peril: an army may glitter like a star-filled sky, yet the night resounds with ominous sounds (jackals), reminding the listener that war’s splendor often masks adharma, fear, and impending destruction.
Sañjaya describes the Kaurava forces at night: ornamented with gems and gold, they appear like a sky of stars, while the camp/battlefield is noisy with troop-clamor and jackal cries, and packed with weapons and banners.
