As a colophon, the passage does not teach through direct instruction but through framing: it highlights that actions in war—especially withdrawal or retreat—carry narrative and ethical weight. In the Mahābhārata’s moral universe, battlefield choices are recorded as consequences of duty, strategy, and circumstance, inviting reflection on how dharma operates under extreme pressure.
Sañjaya signals the completion of a chapter within the Droṇa Parva, under the Jayadratha-slaying section, whose subject is Karṇa’s withdrawal/retreat. It functions as an editorial/narrative closure line, marking the end of that chapter’s episode.
